About
Capitol Watch USA explains state legislatures in plain English: how they work, who’s in them and what they’re doing.
Why we built this
What happens in your state capitol shapes daily life: schools, taxes, housing, roads, health care. But the information is scattered across official websites and written in government jargon. We bring it together in plain English, so in a few minutes you can see what’s happening and what it means for you.
Who it’s for
Anyone curious how government works. How many people live in Texas? What’s the capital of Nevada? Get quick facts about every state, kept up to date from official sources.
Explore every state
Our map covers all 50 states. Pick one to see its capital, population, number of lawmakers, when its legislature is in session, and links to its official websites. Our Learn page explains how a bill becomes a law and how the states compare.
Go deeper with our bill trackers
See which new state laws could affect you, sorted by who you are: homeowner, parent, veteran, small business owner and more. Each bill gets a plain-English summary, shown next to its official text.

How we work
- Official sources first. Every link goes to an official government website, and population numbers come from the U.S. Census Bureau.
- Independent and nonpartisan. No ads, and no money from political parties or campaigns.
- Open about AI. Bill nicknames and summaries on our trackers are written with AI, and the bill’s official text is always included.
