What we collect
You can browse this site without giving us any personal information. We only collect what you choose to send us:
- Email updates: your email address, and your first name if you give it.
- Contact form: your email address, your message, and your name if you give it.
How we use it
We use your email address to send the updates you signed up for, and contact form messages only to reply to you. We do not sell, rent, or share your information with third parties for their own marketing purposes.
Where it’s stored
Email sign-ups are kept by Mailchimp, our email service provider. Contact form messages are stored in our own database, hosted on Supabase, and are also emailed to our team so we can reply promptly.
Companies that help us run the site
A few service providers run parts of this site for us: Netlify hosts it, Supabase stores contact form messages, Mailchimp sends our emails, and Google provides site analytics and the site’s fonts. They handle your information only to provide their service to us. Like most websites, our host and these providers receive your IP address and basic browser details when you visit.
Our emails
Our emails tell us whether they were opened and which links were clicked, so we can see what’s useful. You can limit this by turning off images in your email app.
How long we keep it
We keep your email sign-up until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it. If you unsubscribe, we keep your email address only to make sure we don’t email you again. We keep contact form messages as long as we need them to reply and keep a record of our conversation, unless you ask us to delete them.
How we protect it
Your information travels to us over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection. Our database is set up so the public can’t read messages; only our team can view them. Our forms also include an invisible spam filter that keeps automated bots out. No system is perfectly secure, but we limit who can see your information and keep only what we need.
Saved on your device
This site remembers your page color choice, and whether you’ve unlocked the pastel colors, in your own browser. That stays on your device and isn’t sent to us. Clearing your browser data resets it.
Site analytics
This site uses Google Analytics to understand how it is used, such as how many people visit, which pages they open, what kind of device they use, and their general location (city or region). Analytics does not tell us your name or who you are. Google Analytics uses cookies; you can block them in your browser settings, and the site will still work. You can also opt out with Google’s Analytics opt-out browser add-on. Learn how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
Do Not Track and tracking across sites
Some browsers have a “Do Not Track” setting. There is no common standard for how websites should respond to it, so this site works the same way whether it is on or off. Google Analytics may collect information about your online activity over time and across different websites. You can limit this by blocking cookies or using Google’s opt-out add-on above.
Links to other sites
This site links to our bill trackers (Dover Dash and Michigan Dash), to official state government websites, and to the U.S. Census Bureau. We aren’t responsible for the privacy practices of other sites; each has its own privacy policy.
Your choices
You can unsubscribe from email updates at any time using the link in any of our emails. To see, correct, or delete the information we have about you, contact us at info@capitolwatchusa.com.
Children’s privacy
Capitol Watch USA is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If we learn that we have, we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we’ll post the new version on this page and change the date at the top.
